Join 2Hawk at the Telluride Wine Festival and Cork & Barrel in Bend

2Hawk Vineyard and Winery Winemaker Kiley Evans Toastingby Kiley Evans, Winemaker

This year, we are proud to have been invited to the 38th Annual Telluride Wine Festival and Cork & Barrel Wine Event in Bend, Oregon. 2Hawk Co-Owner and Vineyard Manager Ross Allen will be in attendance with me, and we’re both looking forward to the opportunity to introduce our spectacular wines to a whole new audience.

The Telluride Wine Festival

What excites me most about this event is the opportunity to share our wines with people who think Oregon is only Pinot noir. At the Telluride Wine Festival, we will be tasting a line-up of authentic Rogue Valley wines that all scored more than 90 points; garnered multiple Editor’s Choice awards and Gold medals; and are redefining what Oregon wine is all about. Malbec, Tempranillo, Grenache, Sauvignon blanc, and Viognier represent a side of Oregon wine relatively few people outside the Pacific Northwest have experienced. These wines are ultra-small production, highly allocated, luxury wines that until the Telluride event have not been poured anywhere outside Oregon because our Wine Club takes nearly every bottle we produce.

We are participating in several events as part of the Festival, but the Toast of Telluride event Friday evening will give guests a chance to spend quality time exploring our wines and learning what makes our site, wines, and the 2Hawk brand special.

The wines we are producing at 2Hawk are examples of what can happen when the status quo is ignored in an effort to redefine what is considered possible.Kiley Evans, 2Hawk Winemaker

I’m also honored to be part of the Sommelier Turned Winemaker Panel. My background in wine has given me the insight to explore many different styles of wine and realize that winemaking can be an incredible artistic outlet. In the past, I produced numerous wines that achieved considerable commercial success but in the grand scheme were really just nondescript, mainstream, and emotionless. In my tenure at 2Hawk, however, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to ride the crest of a wave of wines made from varieties that are outside the norm for Oregon. The wines we are producing at 2Hawk are examples of what can happen when the status quo is ignored in an effort to redefine what is considered possible. Our Darow Series wines are perfect examples because no one I am aware of in Oregon, or anywhere else in the US, is doing what we are doing with Tempranillo, Malbec, and Viognier. The results of our efforts—the wines themselves—are being recognized by wine writers, judges, and other industry professionals as among the finest of their respective types.

The Cork & Barrel Wine Event

For Cork & Barrel, I’m delighted that we’ll be able to shake hands with a big group of our Wine Club members we don’t get to see often. Granted, they probably get by the Tasting Room periodically, but Ross and I are not typically in the Tasting Room, so we miss them on their visits.

2Hawk’s Unique Story

2Hawk is the unlikely story of a visionary farmer from California and a wide-eyed sommelier-turned-winemaker from Florida working together to redefine what Oregon wine can be beyond Pinot noir.
2Hawk is the unlikely story of a visionary farmer from California and a wide-eyed Sommelier-turned-Winemaker from Florida working together to redefine what Oregon wine can be beyond Pinot noir. How many brands at either event will have representation like 2Hawk? I’m sure there will be a few winemakers scattered around, but I doubt anyone will have the owner/vineyard manager and winemaker there together—certainly none with the kind of unique partnership Ross and I share.

There are experiences I miss about being on the floor in my sommelier role, but I know my talents are best utilized in the winery, turning exceptional fruit into distinctive wines to be shared among friends and family. I do my best to keep learning with every vintage. My goal is to interpret and express the vineyard and vintage conditions with depth and nuance. I take my job seriously, I don’t take myself too seriously, and I do my best to practice restraint in my work.
